Challenging conditions and a star-studded field

Press Release
Hugo Tormento (FRA) and Adriel Young (AUS) defend their title at ÖTILLÖ World Series Utö! |
On a beautiful but very windy day on the island of Utö, 516 racers from 27 countries started in the first European ÖTILLÖ event of the 2025 season. In the World Series race with 222 participants, the field was exceptionally strong, with a combined 22 World Championship titles on the start line, among them Desirée Andersson (SWE), Kristin Larsson (SWE), Adriel Young (AUS), Daniel Hansson (SWE) and Hugo Tormento (FRA). The World Series course covered a total distance of 32.3 km, comprising of 4.2 km of open water swimming and 28.1 km of partly very technical trail running with a total of 36 transitions between land and water. The air temperature was 16 degrees Celsius and the water temperature was unseasonably cold at around 12 degrees. In the men’s category, the French/Australian duo Hugo Tormento and Adriel Young lead the race from the beginning, but were closely followed by three other teams: Alexis Charrier and Thomas Deffains, David Pesquet and Alexandre Dumoulin and Johan Skårbratt and Lars Ekman. The decisive part of the course were the islands north of Utö, where the teams had to battle very tough conditions in the water, with strong currents and big waves, in addition to the very technical running sections across these islands. It was there that Hugo Tormento and Adriel Young could increase their lead over Alexis Charrier and Thomas Deffains, who took second place. Johan Skråbratt and Lars Ekman finished in third place after a remarkable chase down the stretch to beat David Pesquet and Alexandre Dumoulin just by seconds. “It is always a pleasure racing out here on Utö, it is so beautiful. It was hard to get out of the water on those islands out there but we had a great day. Hugo dragged me along all day so what more can you ask for than to have a great team mate like that.”, Adriel Young said after the race. Hugo Tormento agreed: “We had a super cool day, it was fun to be in those waves with Adriel by my side!” In the women’s category, Desirée Andersson from Sweden and Sabina Rapelli from Switzerland, both of them reigning World Champions, showed a very dominant performance right from the start. They lead the field throughout the race and won with a comfortable lead over Lisa Ring and Klara Willcocks Kjellgren from Sweden and Stine Møllebro and Karin Peters from Denmark. In the mixed category, the Swedish team of Anna Hellström and Victor Dahl lead from the start but were always closely followed by Kristin Larsson and Daniel Hansson, also from Sweden. Anna Hellström and Victor Dahl showed a very strong performance on the technical trail running sections on the north eastern part of the course around Utö, where they could most increase their lead, winning by six minutes over Kristin Larsson and Daniel Hansson. Therese Østeraas and Johan Holgersson finished in third place in a time of 4:18:07. The solo race was dominated by the very strong performances of the Swede Alexander Berggren in the mens category, winning in a time of 3:34:27, ten minutes ahead of Daniel Rowland from Switzerland and Henrik Warfvinge from Sweden. In the women’s solo category, Linn Bengtsson from Sweden took the win in a very remarkable time of 3:53:08 over Tamsyn Clark from Great Britain and Jill Wake from Sweden. The next races of the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series 2025 will he held in Engadin, Switzerland on July 5th and in Whistler, Canada, on July 6th. Race Results ÖTILLÖ Utö World Series MEN 1.
