RACE DIRECTORS REPORT & OFFICIAL VIDEO ÖTILLÖ SWIMRUN CANNES 2022

SOME DAYS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS!

On October 15th we hosted our 5th version of ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Cannes. It was a yet another beautiful day in Cannes as the last three years have been.

Since our first race in Cannes every year has been different with complications and new race courses at each event. This year was no different; not so much complications but for sure new versions of all race courses.

All races in one day

For the first time in Cannes we planned to have all race distances in one day, as we have done for the majority of all races this year.

Thanks to great planning from our responsible race directors and a friction-free partnership with Laurent & Philippe we managed to set the stage for it all to go as planned.

The extra spice this year was the fantastic number of racers. In total 646 persons entered in all three distances. our biggest amount ever in Cannes and our second largest start field ever. Thank you all for the trust.

Race day

It is always exciting to wake up on race day. To open the window and feel the weather.

Race day woke up as a still day with very little humidity and quite warm temperatures already before dawn. It would be a great day!

The World Series racers went out to Ile St Marguerite with the chartered ferry as the sun rose. At the same time we prepared registration in the Hotel Martinez and the whole start area on the Martinez beach.

By pushing lightly we managed to have every racer in their corresponding start boxes for on-time starts.

It was beautiful to see the World Series racers flow out of the fort and it was equally beautiful to see almost 400 persons charging down the beach in front of the Croisette.

The outcome

Over the day the three race distances flowed throughout the City of Cannes, surprising many of the weekend visitors when seeing men and women, young and old, in all shapes and forms running and smiling past them.

It is so good to see so many nationalities represented, 27 in total and the diversity of the swimrun community.

In all three distances we had lots of newcomers to the sport and lots of newcomers to ÖTILLÖ Swimrun. It is an honor to be able to open up a door to a new activity. We also had lots of returning racers in all distances which makes for a very pleasant reunion of smiles.

In the World Series distance Max & Hugo proved yet again why they are the best in the world. Winning their 6th consecutive race. Helena Sivertsson, one of our current Womens World Champions raced solo as her partner was sick in the morning. She won too. In Mixed Desirée Andersson, also a World Champion, took her 19th World Series win, this time with Alexis Charrier. In the Womens category the race was won by the newly composed pair of Sabina Rapelli and Johanna Paulsson. In solo Men Matthieu Poullain raced on his own and stuck close to Max & Hugo for about half the race.

The atmosphere at the finish line was great with more than 600 swimrunners united in their love of the sport.

Our last race

On November 5th we will host our last race. This time on Malta. It is the last opportunity to collect ranking points for the selection to ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship 2023.
