ÖTILLÖ WORLD SERIES CASCO BAY – AUGUST 11TH On August 11, over 400 athletes were treated to the eighth edition of the Casco Bay Islands Swimrun—America’s original Swimrun. This year, Casco Bay operated under the ÖTILLÖ banner for the first time. A day of island-hopping on Maine’s picturesque coast unfolded under clear blue skies. Athletes enjoyed warm summer temperatures, ocean swims, and ran courses that ranged from easy to technical across the three separate course distances offered. In the World Series event, which featured 17 miles of running and 7940 meters of swimming, team “Chum Brothers” Adrian Cameron and Justin Arnosky took first in the men’s team division. The “Boston Wet Sox” secured their place as the unbeatable mixed team of Bronwen and Gregory Price-Dierksen. “As Is NYC,” made up of Nargus Harounzadeh and Tara McWilliams took first in the women’s team division. “It was a beautiful day out there today,” said Adrian Cameron of the Chum Brothers. “Vail Island is always the most memorable—those rocks are unique in terms of the American courses,” he added. The Chum Brothers have ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship in Sweden coming up and used Casco Bay as a chance to dial in their nutrition, teamwork, and equipment. “We wanted to make sure we had the right wetsuits and shoes, something comfortable that we can wear all day,” said Arnosky. “Casco Bay is a little bit more technical, especially Vail Island,” said Harounzadeh, echoing Cameron above. “But it’s a really nice introduction to swimrun for folks who haven’t done one before. It was my first one—it definitely hooked me.” In the World Series solo division, 31-year-old James Crabb of Chesterfield, VA took first in his first ever swimrun, while Shea DeWald of Seattle, Wash. took first woman. “You just gotta do the work. There’s no special sauce or secret way around it. The only way to get through it is by doing it. If you want to get comfortable doing 5000 plus meters of swimming, you have to get the volume in on your shoulders,” said Crabb, who works as a full-time swim coach at Nova of Virginia Aquatics. In the Sprint event, which featured 8.5 miles of running and 3230 meters of swimming, team “2 Clams” Ksen and Olga Golovkina took first in the women’s team division (and overall), and team “Tiger Sharks” took first in the men’s. Team “Early Risers”, Kendra Emery and Nicholas Citriglia took first in the mixed division. Brian Tsua took first in the Sprint solo men’s division, with Olivia Lutkevich as first female. The day also featured a shorter Experience distance, with team “Sister, Sister” of Eva and Julia Estrada taking the women’s division and Team Raki of Finn and Marko Zatylny taking the men’s. Michelle McCarthy took the female (and overall) women’s Experience solo division, with Dodd Loomis taking first among men. We look forward to welcoming athletes to ÖTILLÖ North America’s next event in Mackinac Island, Michigan on August 25th, 2024. |
