Breaking Barriers Together
Kathy and Cheyenne’s Unstoppable ÖTILLÖ Austin Journey
An Extraordinary Journey Begins
Kathleen Borrone Rooy and Cheyenne Meyer’s journey at the ÖTILLÖ Austin Swimrun is nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing the power of trust, determination, and friendship. Kathy, who is DeafBlind, had dreamed of completing a race like this for years, but there were numerous unknowns. This unique race, which included nearly two miles of swimming and seven miles of running over five runs and four swims, demanded resilience and adaptability. Kathy had to navigate a challenging course filled with rocky cliffs, narrow trails, and unpredictable terrain while relying on her guide, Cheyenne, who communicated with her using ProTactile and American Sign Language. Kathy reflected, “The trails were tough, and I couldn’t rely on my vision to see where I was going. But with Cheyenne’s guidance and my trust in her, I knew I was safe, and we could handle anything the race threw our way.”
The Power of Trust and Communication
For Cheyenne, this race was one of the most mentally and physically demanding experiences she had ever guided. As Kathy’s guide, she had to be extra attentive, ensuring they safely navigated everything from rocky paths to cliff jumps. The terrain was challenging, with narrow, rocky trails and cliffs to navigate. Cheyenne shared, “It took a lot of mental focus to make sure we both stayed safe. The terrain was tough, and I could only imagine how much trust it took for Kathy to complete this race without her sight and hearing. But Kathy’s strength and resilience are unmatched. She never backs down from a challenge.” The two women have raced together for years, forming a deep bond built on mutual respect and communication, and this event was no different. Together, they proved that determination and teamwork can overcome the most difficult obstacles.
A Milestone Achievement for DeafBlind Athletes
What makes Kathy and Cheyenne’s achievement even more inspiring is the significant milestone they’ve reached: Kathy is the first DeafBlind person to complete an ÖTILLÖ Swimrun race. Their victory is a powerful message to the world that with the right support, there are no limits. Throughout the race, Kathy and Cheyenne demonstrated the strength of their partnership, proving that DeafBlind athletes can excel in the most challenging environments. As Cheyenne put it, “I’m so grateful to the DeafBlind community and the training I’ve received over the years. Together, Kathy and I have shown the world that #DeafBlindCan, and no dream is too big when you have the right team and the right mindset.”
Inspiring the World with Limitless Possibilities
Kathy’s courage, Cheyenne’s skill as a guide, and their unshakable bond are a testament to the limitless possibilities that await when we push beyond our perceived boundaries. Their success in the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun is not just about completing a race; it is about proving to the world that DeafBlind individuals can accomplish extraordinary feats. They’ve set an inspiring example for others to follow, showing that, with determination, trust, and the right support, no challenge is too great to overcome. The ÖTILLÖ Team is inspired and says CONGRATS to Kathy & Cheyenne!
