Covid -19 final update

ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar on April 18 & 19, 2020

Due to the Covid-19 situation in Europe with travel bans in place, gatherings suspended for more than 100 persons and an official letter for the local authorities we have today decided to POSTPONE ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar until November 7 & 8, 2020.

We will automatically transfer all your entries to those dates. If you can not participate in that event we will allow you to sell your entry to someone else.

For those that are signed up to the event as of this notice and are in the process of qualifying via the 7/24 program to ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship 2020. We will count ÖTILLÖ Hvar for you if you keep your entry for November.

If you have a booking at AMFORA HOTEL in April. Please make sure you cancel your reservation and then re-book for November.

Four (4) weeks before each coming event we will communicate what we will do based on the situation on-hand at that time.

With respect,

The ÖTILLÖ team

The best way to get to the Island of Hvar is to fly to Split, Croatia. From Split Airport you take a 30-minute bus ride or taxi to the harbour where there are daily ferries to the Island of Hvar.

Make sure you take the ferry to Town of Hvar and not Stari Grad.
The Jadrolinija ferry leaves every day at 09:30 and the ride takes 65 minutes. The ferry back to Split on Monday leaves at 12:30.

The Krilo ferry leaves four times every day, 07:40, 09:30, 16:00 and 17:00, the ride takes 50 minutes. The ferry back to Split on Monday leaves at 11:00, 14:35, 18:30 and 19:50.

In Hvar we have a fantastic hotel partner, Suncani Hvar. They have put together the best deal in town for all of you at the beautiful Hotel Amfora. Breakfast is included in the price and an additional dinner package is available for those who wants. You are of course free to look around but we think it is a deal hard to beat.

Hotel Amfora
Single: € 67/night
Double: € 42/person/night
Dinner extra: € 15/person

On the Friday before the race we will have several social activities that are open for you, your friends and your family.

At 11 am we will together with local school children go out on some of the beaches and collect garbage together. Some of this will be sorted right away as ”useful garbage”.

At 2 pm a local artist, Mark Boellaard will have a workshop at Fabrika 35 on how to make the ”useful garbage” into art installations. He calls his work ”assemplage” – check out his instagram @markboellaard for inspiration.

At 4 pm we together with ARK and Vivobarefoot will host a Social swimrun. Starting on the beach below Hotel Amfora. NOTE: This is not to perform; it is to have fun and to bring your families and friends into the sport.

At 6:30 pm we can all meet up for a social drink and finger food at the ”roof top” bar at Hotel Adriana in the harbor.

  • Toilets are available by the start line
  • You can leave a small bag on the indicated place at the start. We will not be able to supervise your belongings so do not leave any valuables.

Cut offs

The ÖTILLÖ Experience does not have any cut-offs.

The ÖTILLÖ Sprint has one (1) cut-off. These are for your safety:

  • Road crossing Miće Marchija at 12:40

The ÖTILLÖ World Series has three (3) cut-offs. These are for your safety:

  • TIME 2 at 11:00
  • TIME 6 at 14:15
  • TIME 8 at 16:05

We have cut-offs in our events to make sure that we can have a safe race, these are put in place so that everyone has a possibility to finish before dark and without jeopardizing the safety of others by stretching the safety organization too much. Please respect this and the people enforcing them.

Energy stations

We will have energy and liquid stations along the course as marked in the course map.

  • Please eat and drink what is offered, do not take more as there are others behind you.
  • Please re-use your cup instead of taking multiple cups.
  • From energy station 2 in the Sprint and energy station 3 in the World Series you will have to use your own collapsible cup or another solution you prefer.
  • We will have water and electrolytes by Precision Hydration at all stations.
  • We will have energy bars from Crownhelth at the energy stations in all races.
  • Besides this we will have fruits and normal food.
  • If you need gels, bring your own and carry in your wetsuit. Do NOT throw the wrappers on the ground, leave it in the garbage cans at the energy stations.

Cups at ÖTILLÖ races

In our quest to leave as small of an environmental footprint as possible we have decided to take away the majority of disposable cups during our races. This means that we will ONLY have disposable, paper cups at the first two (2) energy stations at the World Series race and first energy station at the Sprint.

After that we expect you to have your own foldable cup or soft flask to be able to drink. If you don’t have your own foldable cup you will be able to buy one at the race registration.

Race course

If the race organization believe there is a danger for the racers or the organization based on weather or other conditions, the course can be changed the day before or even in the middle of the race. Safety is our priority.

  • Take care of each other; it is a long and tough course.
  • We have safety boats and are trying to do our best to cover the course.
  • All racers have to help another racer in an emergency.
  • We have 2 medics and 1 doctor on the course. We also have two stationary medical teams and medical assistance at the finish line
  • Communicate with race officials when help is needed.
  • If you abandon the race you must communicate with race officials as soon as possible and return the timing chip to the ÖTILLÖ tent by the Finish Line (from behind). Do not cross or go close to the finish line with it on.
  • You cannot wear a tow rope before the second swim.
  • You will get a safety buoy per team for the swim from TIME 2 to TIME 3. You will receive it at TIME 2 and you leave it at TIME 3.
  • We suggest that you do not use a tow rope between TIME 3 and TIME 4.

Swimrun rescue

As a swimrunner you are responsible for your team mate and for others around you. It is your obligation to know how to rescue someone out of the water, how to do CPR and how to use your Mandatory pressure bandage if someone has a bad cut. Here are some good films for you to watch.

Weather in Hvar

In the end of March and the beginning of April the spring has started in Croatia with usually dry, sunny weather. Outside temperature is close to 18 degrees and this means that it will be warmer in the sun. Water temperatures are between 16 – 17 degrees C.

Like everywhere we can have wind, rain and un-seasonably cold, make sure you bring clothes to handle this.

The water in Hvar is salty, this has an advantage as you will have more flotation, it also has a disadvantage and that is the possibility for chafing during the race. Make sure you prepare areas that rub so you enjoy both the beginning and the end of the race.

Spectators, friend and families

We strongly suggest that you take the time to enjoy Hvar and bring your friends and family to enjoy a long weekend or the week with you. The hotel deal at Hotel Amfora is of course for them as well.

As the course passes through the town centre you will be able to see the start, the middle and the end of the race from there.

NOTE: you may not assist any teams unless if it is a medical emergency. Any other assistance will result in disqualification of the team.

ÖTILLÖ qualification

The first two men, women and mixed teams where no team member already has a spot for ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship 2020 will be awarded a spot. If a team does not want the spot it will roll down to the next eligible team. If no team wants the spot it goes back to the ÖTILLÖ organisation who are free to do what they want with it. The entry fee needs to be payed at the date set in the invoice.

Swimrun ranking

ÖTILLÖ Merchandise

Swimming induced pulmonary oedema (SIPE) is a condition which has gained attention in recent years. In short, due to somewhat unclear mechanism, fluid collects in the lungs, compromising the transfer of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream. This results in the following symptoms;

  • Shortness of breath
  • Decreased oxygen saturation (which has to be measured with medical instruments)
  • Cough, sometimes with blood

There is ongoing research in the subject, and as the knowledge increases, we will hopefully learn how to better prevent, diagnose and treat the condition.

The current research suggests that the condition terminates in less than 48h. Often it’s enough to stop the activity, remove/open up the wetsuit and get warm. In some cases, oxygen therapy is needed. It’s not fully understood why the condition arises.

There are yet no studies evaluating the long-term effects of SIPE. There is evidence that susceptible individuals may have recurrent episodes of SIPE. There are some medications that may help to prevent recurrent episodes.

If you experience the above symptoms, we recommend stopping the activity and contacting race marshals. If you encounter symptoms during a training session, we recommend seeking medical attention since there are other medical conditions which can manifest in the same way.

Train smart, race hard and take care of yourself and your partner!

Force Majeure

Neither the participant nor the race organizer shall be held responsible for a force majeure event. Force majeure means any event which is unforeseen and beyond the reasonable control of either party including but not limited to the following: Act of God, adverse weather, inevitable accident, failure or shortage of power supplies, fire, flood, epidemic, earthquake, explosion, lightning, war or armed conflict, embargo, government or regulatory action or decree, riot or civil disturbance, strike, lock-outs, or other industrial action, terrorist action, failure or delay of common carrier or impairment or lack of adequate transportation facilities.

If by reason of any force majeure event the race organizer is delayed in, or prevented from, performing any of the obligations with regards to staging the race, no loss or damage shall be claimed by the participant by reason thereof.
