The alpine Swimrun race

This Sprint distance is very rewarding. The course has some up and down, it has great swims with spectacular views and it has lots of spectators.
The ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Sprint course in Engadin is around the small town of Silvaplana. With swims in two lakes and some great runs; both on the valley floor and some with some vertical gain. The race course is beautiful and rewarding.
An ÖTILLÖ Sprint race is the perfect swimrun race for those of you who feel that the World Series is too much or for those who want to go fast. Traditionally we have everything from very strong racers to absolute beginner Swimrunners doing the Sprint distances. Race in pairs or solo.

About ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Engadin
This destination is like a fairy tale. It is the race that launched the international swimrun movement in 2014 as the first race ever outside of Sweden. A unique race in a unique place, hosted in the fantastic Engadin Valley in Switzerland.
The well-known St Moritz is in one end of the valley and in the other you find the mountain communities of Silvaplana, Sils and Maloja. The valley has several pristine mountain lakes on the valley floor and also some at altitude, up in the mountains.
In July the flowers are in full bloom, the glaciers hang over the valleys and the lakes have warmed up. The valley floor is at 1700 metres which means that you are at altitude. The weather in the mountains during this period can be anything from a nice summer day to a cold, hard day out. Be mentally prepared for the worst and enjoy the best.

Engadin race specific information
The race are is on the football field at the Mulets Sports Centre in Silvaplana.
Face masks in Switzerland
In Switzerland you must still wear a face mask indoors and in public transportation.
Changing rooms, toilets and showers
At the Sports Centre there are changing rooms. There you can find toilets and showers too.
On Saturday you may leave a small bag with essentials in the White race tent.
On Sunday you can take a small bag with you on the bus. Which you can leave in an indicated place at the start line. We will take it to the finish area and leave in the White race tent.
NOTE: The bag drop is not guarded.
In Silvaplana there are several restaurants which you can use. On Saturday and Sunday all racers will have a “take away” kiosk next to the big, white tent.

The Federal Council has decided to relax the requirements for entering Switzerland from June 26th.
Persons entering from the Schengen area will no longer be required to quarantine. The requirement to be tested will now apply only to persons arriving by plane who have not been vaccinated or have not recovered from COVID-19. Contact details will still be required when arriving by plane.
Non risk third countries
Albania, Andorra, Australia, Bulgaria, Vatcian, Hongkong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Croatia, Lebanon, Macau, Monaco, New Zealand, Nordmazedonien, Ruanda, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United States of America. Same rules as for EU/Schengen: No quarantine when vaccinated, or recovered, or with negative test.
All other third countries:
Switzerland is easing the existing entry restrictions for persons arriving from third countries who can prove they have been vaccinated or recovered. The list of countries issued by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) will been amended accordingly, it is currently still showing the old list.
Entry from a country with a variant of the virus of concern (VOC)
Current list of high-risk countries (India, UK, Canada, Brazil, South Africa, Nepal): Visitors who have been vaccinated or who have recovered from the disease will be permitted to enter Switzerland from these countries or regions without having to be tested or to quarantine as long as it is certain that the vaccination offers good protection. Those who have neither been vaccinated nor have recovered must present a negative PCR test or rapid antigen test and go into quarantine on entry. In practice, this means that persons who have been vaccinated or who have recovered do not have to produce a negative test even when travelling from countries where the Delta variant is widespread (such as India or the United Kingdom) and do not have to quarantine on entry.

All in all, great news, all countries can enter Switzerland again if vaccinated or recovered.
ÖTILLÖ Engadin is in the beautiful Engadin Valley in Switzerland. The race HQ and finish line is in Silvaplana at the Mulets Sports center. We suggest you fly to Zurich, Milano or Bergamo. From these airports there are several travel options to Engadin. From Zurich you can either rent a car or take the train. In Switzerland the train service is phenomenal so you can go from the airport to St. Moritz (Engadin valley) within 4 hours and the train ride is beautiful. Check out train tickets on www.sbb.ch.
From Bergamo or Milan, you will need to rent a car.
NOTE: there is a great public bus system in the Engadin Valley that we recommend you to use. The Taxi is very expensive.
There are lots of different accommodation options in the Engadin valley. From the most expensive hotels to apartments or youth hostels.
All racers have to come to the registration to collect the Start pack. At the registration you will have to display your photo-ID. If you race in a team both team members need to come to the registration together. For a smoother process, please look up your start number before picking up your Start pack. If you plan to race with fins you need to bring these so that we can verify that they are in line with the rules.
We will have energy and liquid stations along the course as marked in the course map.
- We will serve fruits and snacks at the energy stations.
- We will have water and electrolytes by Precision Hydration at all stations.
- Please do not take more than you need as there are others behind you.
- We will have paper cups at all energy stations but you are free to use your own collapsible cup as well.
- Please re-use your cup instead of taking multiple cups.
- If you need gels, bring your own and carry in your wetsuit. Do not throw the wrappers on the ground, leave it in the garbage cans at the energy stations.

During the 2021 season we will have a general online briefing for each distance. This will be available on our Youtube from June 17th. This will be mandatory to watch.
For each event there is a specific RACE INFORMATION section at the bottom of each race page which we strongly suggest that you read so you can prepare for a successful race.
At registration at each destination one of the Race Directors will be present to answer questions. We will have a short race information session before start about things that are specific for each race day.
The start for the Sprint and Experience is the same as the finish line on the Sports field by the Mulets.. Make sure you are on-time.
The start of the World Series & World Series distance Solo race is in Maloja (By Villa Baldini). We have an organised bus transport, with three pick up points, to take you there – ONLY FOR RACERS (see map). A face mask is mandatory on the bus.
NOTE: The bus will not wait. Be on-time.
- You have to be in the start box 10 minutes before the start.
- Toilets are available by the start line
- You can leave a small bag by the start. We will take it to the finish area and leave in the White race tent.
NOTE: Do not leave valuables, the bag drop is not guarded.
The ÖTILLÖ Sprint and Experience Engadin does not have any cut-offs. The ÖTILLÖ World Series and the ÖTILLÖ World Series distance Solo has two (2) cut-offs. These are for your safety:
- TIME 3 at 11:00
- TIME 7 at 14:50
We have cut-offs in our events to make sure that we can have a safe race, these are put in place so that everyone has a possibility to finish before dark and without jeopardizing the safety of others by stretching the safety organization too much. Please respect this and the people enforcing them.

We will cover the ÖTILLÖ Engadin LIVE on otilloswimrun.com/live, please spread the information to all your friends and family. We will also use #otilloengadin to tag our posts, please do so you too. Our images that we post from the race are free to use for you as racers but not allowed for commercial use to promote other products or events.
In the middle of July, it is usually summer in the Engadin Valley with day time temperatures of around 20 degrees C. However, the valley floor is at 1700 meters above sea level and this means that there could even be snowfall.
Water temperatures will be between 10 – 14 degrees C depending on where along the course. Make sure you dress accordingly and consider wearing something under your wetsuit if you tend to get cold on the long swims. Use a Neoprene cap if you are not used to cold water.
Like everywhere we can have wind, rain and un-seasonably cold weather. Make sure you bring clothes to handle this.
We welcome all spectators, friends and families to participate in our events. During the Covid-19 Pandemic you need to observe our ÖTILLÖ Covid-19 Safety Management Plan. We ask you to make sure you avoid creating a crowd and to keeping safe distance to others. In the event area at the finish line we will only allow racers.
The course is very easy to follow by bike and these are available for rent in Silvaplana. Make sure to ride safely as you are on open roads.

NOTE: you may not assist any teams unless if it is a medical emergency. Any other assistance will result in disqualification of the team.
ÖtillÖ general race information
COVID-19 UPDATE July 9, 2020
Each athlete participating in an ÖTILLÖ Swimrun (World Series, Sprint & Experience race) must know, understand and follow all the competition rules. Please read the ÖTILLÖ Standard Swimrun rules.
- Take care of each other; it is a long and tough course.
- We have safety boats and are trying to do our best to cover the course.
- All teams have to help another team in an emergency.
- We have medics on the course.
- Communicate with race officials when help needed.
- If you abandon the race you must communicate with race officials as soon as possible and return the timing chip at the finish area.
- You cannot wear a tow rope for the first run.
- We suggest that you do NOT use a tow rope when running in difficult terrain.
As stated in the ÖTILLÖ COVID- 19 SAFETY MANAGEMENT PLAN 2020 we will now have disposable paper cups at all energy stations. Please re-use your cup instead of taking multiple cups. The foldable cup is therefore not included in the mandatory equipment.
If the race organization believe there is a danger for the racers or the organization based on weather or other conditions, the course can be changed the day before or even in the middle of the race. Safety is our priority.

You must have a valid personal insurance for racing in Swimrun. If you do not have one you can purchase it for the race or for the whole season, valid in all the races listed. It is an insurance that will repay your entry fee and travel costs if you have to withdraw prior to the race due to an accident or illness (you have to have a doctor’s certificate).

A spot will be awarded to the first two men, women and mixed teams where no team member already has a spot for the following ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship. On ÖTILLÖ Utö, Engadin and Gothenburg we will have three qualifier spots per category.
If a team does not want the spot it will roll down to the next eligible team. If no team wants the spot it goes back to the ÖTILLÖ organisation who are free to do what they want with it. The entry fee needs to be payed at the date set in the invoice.
All teams that finish an ÖTILLÖ World Series race or a race with ÖTILLÖ merit status will receive ranking points, see all merit races here. Check out the races, finish it and get points. If you are not registered, read more about the Swimrun ranking and register here.
To be able to participate in ÖTILLÖ The Swimrun World Championship through ranking selection or random team selection, you need to have ranking points. Read more about how to gain your spot for ÖTILLÖ The Swimrun World Championship here.
Teams that finish top 30 in each category (Women/Men/Mixed) will collect points in the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series. Your team can collect points from all ÖTILLÖ World Series events and ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship.
The winning team in each category will be honored at the last World Series event of the year.

As a swimrunner you are responsible for your team mate and for others around you. It is your obligation to know how to rescue someone out of the water, how to do CPR and how to use your Mandatory pressure bandage if someone has a bad cut. Here are some good films for you to watch.
Swimming induced pulmonary oedema (SIPE) is a condition which has gained attention in recent years. In short, due to somewhat unclear mechanism, fluid collects in the lungs, compromising the transfer of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream. This results in the following symptoms;
- Shortness of breath
- Decreased oxygen saturation (which has to be measured with medical instruments)
- Cough, sometimes with blood
There is ongoing research in the subject, and as the knowledge increases, we will hopefully learn how to better prevent, diagnose and treat the condition.
The current research suggests that the condition terminates in less than 48h. Often it’s enough to stop the activity, remove/open up the wetsuit and get warm. In some cases, oxygen therapy is needed. It’s not fully understood why the condition arises.
There are yet no studies evaluating the long-term effects of SIPE. There is evidence that susceptible individuals may have recurrent episodes of SIPE. There are some medications that may help to prevent recurrent episodes.
If you experience the above symptoms, we recommend stopping the activity and contacting race marshals. If you encounter symptoms during a training session, we recommend seeking medical attention since there are other medical conditions which can manifest in the same way.

Neither the participant nor the race organizer shall be held responsible for a force majeure event. Force majeure means any event which is unforeseen and beyond the reasonable control of either party including but not limited to the following: Act of God, adverse weather, inevitable accident, failure or shortage of power supplies, fire, flood, epidemic, earthquake, explosion, lightning, war or armed conflict, embargo, government or regulatory action or decree, riot or civil disturbance, strike, lock-outs, or other industrial action, terrorist action, failure or delay of common carrier or impairment or lack of adequate transportation facilities.
If by reason of any force majeure event the race organizer is delayed in, or prevented from, performing any of the obligations with regards to staging the race, no loss or damage shall be claimed by the participant by reason thereof.
