#CLEANTHEOCEANACTIVITY BY THE SCHOOL ON STYRSÖ
WE CAN ALL DO SOMETHING
As you might know the race courses for ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Gothenburg are in the Southern Archipelago just outside the city of Gothenburg. The races take place on the islands of Styrsö, Brännö, Asperö, Köpstadsö and Vrångö among others.
On June 10th close to 200 children between the ages of 6 – 16 years old took part in a #cleantheocean activity initiated by ÖTILLÖ and executed by the school on Styrsö together with “Strandstädarna”, an NGO.
The children spread out on the islands of Donsö, Styrsö, Brännö, Asperö, Köpstadsö and Vrångö and collected whatever garbage they could find during the day.
The islands act as a natural barrier towards the open sea and anything coming from the West will end up on the shores of the islands. Especially after big winter storms.
All in all the children collected:
- Brännö 5 big garbage bags + 1 bicycle + 1 sign
- Vrångö 10 big garbage bags
- Asperö 2 big garbage bags
- Köpstadsö 3 big garbage bags
- Styrsö 10 big garbage bags
- Donsö 16 big garbage bags + old nylon ropes
The majority of the garbage was plastic, bits of old rope, glas and other junk that has been brought by the sea. Other things like the bicycle and sign was things that had been dumped in the sea locally.
We all need to do something to preserve these fantastic environments and raise awareness that anything we collect is one thing less in nature.
At the prize giving at ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Gothenburg we will honor the children for their effort.
