Swimrun Life #5 2017 – A word from the editor

I find myself waking up extra early on Sunday mornings with the anticipation of a blissfully long swimrun training day ahead of me. Instead, I put on an ÖTILLÖ cap and stare fondly at my paddles with this year’s race distances scribbled across them. Race days are not all I’m yearning for. It’s the people, the ÖTILLÖ community that I miss.

Race Directors’ Moment: The year is coming to a close

The selection process for the 2018 ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship has started and the registration for Director’s Choice and the Ranking application is now open. There are four more ÖTILLÖ qualification races, plus the 7/24 concept.

In 2016, we started a Ranking System that we could be as fair as possible when awarding spots to the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship. Before this method, we had to try to sift through hundreds of applications and go with our gut feeling. Now we can finally see its full effect.

Josefine Fast and Maria Möller swimrun for fun

Josefine and Maria started working out three years ago at ages 34 and 37. As team Swimrun4fun, they not only finished the 2017 ÖTILLÖ WC but are No 2 in the 2017 World Series Women’s Team ranking. The True Heroes of ÖTILLÖ: Meet Olof Karlsson

Olof drove 7 hours to come and talk to me. I suggested Skyping or a phone call but he insisted, he wanted to see me in person. At the age of 40, Olof weighed 160 kg. He’s now hoping to qualify for the 2019 ÖTILLÖ Swimrun WC via the 24/7 concept.

While they are wonderful people we really don’t want to see or talk to them during a race because that means that someone is in need of their assistance.

Swimrun NC sets the course for community outreach

In 2016, Swimrun North Carolina bought Braille signs for the museum at Hanging Rock State Park, where the race takes place. This year, Swimrun NC spent $7,300 on a mobile fire fighting system for one of the parks ATVs. They also connect the elementary schools with the racers. Herbert Krabel shares the philosophy of the non-profit event.

Ida Enstedt creates Garmin swimrun app and becomes a WC swimrunner along the way

Ida Enstedt, a marketing coordinator for Garmin Nordics and part of the team responsible for developing Garmin’s swimrun app, first initiated the collaboration between Garmin and ÖTILLÖ with two successful Garmin sponsored teams. That got her well and truly hooked with the sport and the World Championship.

At the age of 10, Helen Maalinn convinced the organiser of a local aquathlon to let her race with the adults. She hasn’t slowed down since.

Why you shouldn’t forget about hydration during winter training

Just because the ÖTILLÖ season has finished, it doesn’t mean you’ve stopped training. And even though it’s winter, you should be thinking about hydration if you want to get the most out of the hours you’re putting in.

Those of you who have participated in a few ÖTILLÖ events have probably come across me in the water on one of the swims along the racecourse, popping up from nowhere in my wetsuit and chasing you, almost a little too close, or putting the camera in your face when you least expect it. Sorry, but I like spending time in the water!
