ÖTILLÖ beer: Because you earned it

ÖTILLÖ swimrun official beer together with Nynäshamn Ångbryggeri

Why swimrun? We’ve asked ourselves this question more than a few times and the answer is always the same: “Well, ‘they’ are as crazy as we are, right?”

A few years back Michael Lemmel reached out to us asking if we’d be interested in brewing a beer for the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship. At the time, we didn’t really get what swimrun was all about but, after meeting with Mr Swimrun himself, we understood that swimrunners are a special breed, who don’t back down when faced with nature’s challenges. Heck, they even thrive in these conditions. And, best of all, they’re doing it all in our own back yard!

For us, there’s a close connection between sports and brewing beer. You have to stay in shape to brew.

The ÖTILLÖ crew and events are immaculately organised and we kind of saw that as a common approach of doing things. You know, if you’re in, why not go all the way?

We’ve been brewing commercially since 1997 and this year we’re celebrating 20 years of pioneering craft beer in Sweden. Starting up a brewery two decades ago, we were met with a lot of resistance. For one, you could hardly list the ingredients to make beer let alone get the proper brewing license. But, like the people who swimrun, we dug in deep and kept on going no matter what hurdles where thrown at us.

Today we are proud of our achievements. We brew more than 18 different beers throughout the year and, as one of Sweden’s biggest craft breweries, we employ 14 people.

Our efforts can be followed on Facebook and Instagram.

For us, there’s a close connection between sports and brewing beer. You have to stay in shape to brew: it’s hard work on your body, both brewing and distributing, and if you like to enjoy a beer now and then, it becomes even more vital to stay healthy. Most of our employees are outdoor types who like to ski, run, surf, ice skate or race bikes. We genuinely look forward to coming home after a great day outdoors to share a fine bottle of beer with friends and round up the day’s efforts.

We are proud to be the official ÖTILLÖ beer partner and this year we’ve our own fully-committed swimrun team – Team Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri, with our close friends Joakim Brunzell and Johan Carlsson, who are scheduled to participate in all ÖTILLÖ sanctioned races in 2017.

If you plan to be at any one of these races, cheer them on and make sure to grab an ÖTILLÖ, the official Swimrun World Championship beer.

Vilken häftig bild. Som ölnörd och swimrunner är det verkligen mina båda intressen i samma bild. Hade gärna gjort en sådan själv 🙂

A word from the editor

When I was in Hvar, Croatia; for the kick off to the ÖTILLÖ swimrun season, I popped my head into to hear Michael Lemmel giving a presentation on the history of ÖTILLÖ and the evolution of the sport of swimrun. My jaw dropped when he showed the cover of 220 Triathlon magazine with the headline “The Rise of Swimrun: The New Endurance Race to Rival Ironman?”

Race Directors’ Moment: a screaming start to the season

Only one team is left in the pursuit of one million Swedish Krona, but the boys in the Golden Jersey will be chased yet again by the top world teams at ÖTILLÖ Utö on May 28th. For an extremely intense course like this, the tougher your training conditions the better so that you can be ready for anything.

UTÖ: a tribute to swimrun

In 2013, Mats Skott and Michael Lemmel had more demand for the original ÖTILLÖ event than they could handle so they decided to do a qualifying race in late spring. It was a given that the first qualifier would be on Utö, as a tribute to the origin of swimrun.

ÖTILLÖ Legend #2: Navy Seal Joe

In 2007, a team from Navy Seals in San Diego signed up for “a new swimrunning race in Sweden. They arrived at Stockholm airport directly from a mission at an undisclosed location. Joe had been throwing up the whole flight. The next day, the pair were at the start and went for it.

Meet a World Champion: Kristin Larsson

As one of swimrun’s most exceptional athletes Kristin Larsson is one of a kind having won six swimrun races in 2016 and broken numerous course records. A mom to her three-year-old son, motherhood has not stopped her. In fact it seems to have made her stronger than ever.

Getting a-HEAD with the right swimrun

While everybody knows that swimrun originated in the Stockholm archipelago, it’s less known that the headquarters of HEAD Swimming, which produce swimrun wetsuits, is situated in the town of Rapallo, on the Mediterranean coast of northern Italy.
