– ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö, 39,8 km, 29 May
– ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Sprint Utö, 12 km, 28 May

No less than 19 nationalities and almost 750 competitors had found their way to the island of Utö in the Stockholm archipelago to compete in the weekend’s swimrun races ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö, a qualifier to ÖTILLÖ The Swimrun World Championship, or ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Sprint Utö, a shorter sprint version of 12 km.

The main race at Utö is a 39,8 km long swimrun where you alternate between trail running and open water swimming, around the beautiful but tough course on Utö and surrounding islands. The top teams are increasing their speed for every year and the Swedish brothers Jonas and Lars Ekman were the first team over the finish line as the only team under four hours with 3:56:49.

The mixed team Daniel Hansson and Kristin Larsson did a sensational race and charged over the finish line as third team overall, only seven minutes after the winners with the impressive time, 4:03:24. Annika Ericsson and Elisabet Pärsdotter Westman were the fastest team in the women’s discipline with the finishing time of 4:38:25.

– We are good at being equally strong, sharing the ’work load’ and pulling each other. That is important when you race in pairs, said Jonas Ekman at the finish line after the important victory. It is the fourth season that the brothers Jonas and Lars Ekman race in swimrun, a quite unknown duo, that will be a force to recon with at the prestigious ÖTILLÖ, the Swimrun World Championship, on September 5th.

The Ekman brothers took the lead early in the race and managed to keep its adversaries behind during the whole course. The mixed team Daniel Hansson and Kristin Larsson were always close to the leaders, sometimes second overall and finally finished sensationally as third team overall. Kristin Larsson is an experienced multisport racer and avid swimrun racer and has learnt to push the limits to its maximum. Very impressive!

The 38,9 km long race is a tough course with varied, technical terrain including slippery rocks, tight trails in the forest, steep hills as well as gruelling long gravel roads and cold 9-12 degrees water of the Baltic Sea. There are 16 different swim sections, meaning 32 changes between running and swimming. Key is to be fast in and out of the water. You run in your wetsuit and swim in your shoes…

Eight top teams qualify to ÖTILLÖ; top 3 men, top 3 mixed, top 2 women.

The next race in the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series will be held for the first time at Isles of Scilly, a group of islands South West of the mainland of Engalnd, on June 18.

About Swimrun and ÖTILLÖ – the Swimrun World Championship

Swimrun is the fast growing sport where you in teams of two alternate trail running and open water swimming on a marked course. There is no time to lose – you run in your wetsuit and swim in your shoes! It is a unique sport and experience as you always race with a partner and the race course is out in wild nature.

ÖTILLÖ is the original and the world’s longest swimrun race, renown as one of the toughest one-day races in the world. You run 65 km on island trails, slippery rocks, unbeaten terrain and you swim a total of 10 km in the cold water of the Baltic Sea. The water is cold, you fight against currents and the course is long. To make it to the finish line before the cut-offs and darkness you can never stop.

ÖTILLÖ is celebrating its 11th edition on 5 September 2016. 120 teams participate and 700 teams are on the waiting list.
